In 2013, to mark the 500-year anniversary of the arrival of Jorge Álvares in China and of Sino-Portuguese relations, the Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies (CETAPS) and the Centre for Overseas History (CHAM) of the New University of Lisbon/the Azores University, and the Fundação Oriente will organise an interdisciplinary International Conference on Macau Narratives.
Since the sixteenth century Macau has been narrated and represented through historical, historiographical and literary texts, as well as by films, paintings and other works of art in museums, archives and institutions all over the world. These kinds of narratives and other will be analysed during the three days of the conference by international scholars.Potential contributors are invited to submit a 300 word abstract on themes related to any of the following conference tracks:

Macau Studies
Historical/Historiographical Narratives on Macau
Macanese and Lusophone Culture and Diaspora
Portuguese Expansion
Orientalism
Exoticism/Representing the Other
Inter-Arts Dialogue and China Trade Art
Colonial and Post-Colonial Studies
European Empires in Asia
Anglo-Portuguese Relations in Asia
Hong Kong Studies
Travel Writing on Macau
Literary and Museum Representations
Luso-Asian Pidgins and Creoles
Sino-Western Relations

Working languages: Portuguese, English, Spanish. No translation will be provided.

Papers and panels on the above themes are invited. However, papers/panels on other subjects related to the above topics will also be considered. Participants will be held to a twenty minute presentation limit.
